Finding a Qualified Coach

How to evaluate an instructor and what questions to ask before you book.

Getting StartedArticleBeginner6 min read

A long competitive résumé does not automatically make someone a good teacher, and some of the best beginner instructors were never household names.

Ask how many students the coach takes at once, how many runs each student gets, and whether film review is part of the session.

Ask who else has learned from them. A coach who can point to students still competing three seasons later is telling you something meaningful.

Key Points

  • Teaching experience is not the same as competitive résumé
  • Ask about class size and run count
  • Ask whether horses are furnished and who has ridden them
